STARKVILLE, Miss.--The North Carolina native known widely as the "first lady of gospel" will present an April 16 concert at Mississippi State University.
Grammy award winner Shirley Caesar will appear with the MSU Black Voices during a Humphrey Coliseum event that begins at 6 p.m. Her visit is sponsored by the student gospel group, as well as by the campus-based Music Maker Productions.
Tickets are $15 in advance; $10 for MSU students with identification. Advance tickets are available at the MSU Athletic Ticket Office, BeBop Records in Starkville; Bryan's Records and Pets in Columbus; and BancorpSouth Center and Ticket Alley, both in Tupelo. Tickets at the door will be $20 for adults; $10 for children 5-10.
Since her debut in the 1960s, Caesar has recorded more than 40 albums and compact discs, including her most recent "Shirley Caesar and Friends." In the process, she has earned 18 Dove, 13 Stellar and 11 Grammy awards.
Her many other honors include an NAACP Achievement Award, McDonald's Golden Circle Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
In addition to her recordings, she has been featured in movies, television and stage. She appeared in the 2003 movie "The Fighting Temptations" and was featured in the soundtrack for the Dreamworks' movie "The Prince of Egypt." She also has performed on Broadway in the gospel musical "Mama, I Want to Sing."
In 1998, she appeared in "Christmas in Washington," a television special taped at the White House. She also has demonstrated her musical skills on entertainment and news programs on all three national TV networks.
