Compliance officer joins research ethics council

STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Mississippi State administrator is a newly elected representative to the Applied Research Ethics National Association.

Tracy S. Arwood, director since 2001 of the university's regulatory compliance office, is one of six new members and one of only three professionals from the South on the council.

Based in Boston, Mass., the organization includes members worldwide who are research administrators, government officials, academic officers, and others interested in the protection of human and animal research subjects.

Arwood heads the MSU office responsible for biosafety, radiological safety, hazardous waste management, human use in research, animal care and use, and scientific misconduct. She ensures compliance with all institutional, state and federal regulations governing each area.

"Tracy is an outstanding professional who is highly knowledgeable about the responsibilities of those conducting research," said Colin Scanes, MSU vice president for research. "With her appointment to this highly prestigious association, she joins some of the leading professionals in the world addressing ethical issues in research."

Arwood has served as a consultant to a number of health care systems in Mississippi and is a member of a human subjects research committee for the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges.

She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in criminal justice, both from Radford (Va.) University.
