Mississippi State aerospace engineering department head Tony Vizzini is a new Fellow of the American Society for Composites.
An expert in composite structures who became university department leader in August 2003, Vizzini has been a member of the ASC since 1987. He earlier served the organization as membership secretary for two years and currently is chair of membership activity development.
Vizzini is among four new fellows elected earlier this month during the ASC's annual technical conference in Atlanta. The society currently has only 21 members nationwide who carry the prestigious title.
"Being recognized as a fellow by one's professional society is an outstanding accomplishment," said Glenn Steele, interim dean of the Bagley College of Engineering. "This recognition of Dr. Vizzini by the American Society of Composites shows his significant contributions to this field of engineering."
The ASC was established in 1985 to provide a communication forum for the engineering and scientific community in composite materials. Organization offices are located at the University of Dayton (Ohio).
"The purpose of the society is to expedite the growth of knowledge gained from interdisciplinary engineering and scientific research in composite materials, and to promote the exploitation of the unique properties of composite materials in emerging applications," explained Vizzini.
An associate professor of aerospace engineering at MSU, he earlier had served on the faculty at the University of Maryland, where he was founding director of the Composites Research Laboratory for the A. James Clark School of Engineering.
Vizzini is a recognized authority on response and failure of composite structures--particularly energy absorption and crashworthiness, tailoring techniques to improve structural integrity and damage tolerance of sandwich structures.
He holds a doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
