A Mississippi State senior is among 18 national recipients of a 2004 John and Elsa Gracik Scholarship from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Justin M. Crapps, a mechanical engineering major from Florence, Ala., was awarded the $1,500 scholarship during the recent ASME annual summer meeting. He is an MSU Dean's Scholar and the son of Kerwin and Donna Crapps.

"This national scholarship is truly an excellent reward for Justin's outstanding accomplishments in the mechanical engineering program at MSU," said department head W. Glenn Steele. "Justin has done an outstanding job and I appreciate the leadership he has provided for our ASME student section."

The Gracik Scholarship is granted on the basis of scholastic ability, character, leadership, and potential contribution to the mechanical engineering profession.

The scholarship was established in 1992 by ASME life member John W. Gracik in honor of his parents. Students receiving the scholarship must be a sophomore, junior or senior ASME student member in good standing, and a U.S. citizen enrolled in a mechanical engineering technology or related baccalaureate program sanctioned by the Accreditation Board of Engineering Technology.

Founded in 1880, ASME today is a 120,000-member professional organization focused on technical, educational and research issues of engineering and technology. The association conducts one of the world's largest technical publishing operations, holds numerous technical conferences worldwide, and offers hundreds of professional development courses each year. The organization also sets internationally recognized industrial and manufacturing codes and standards that enhance public safety.
