Six senior Mississippi State art students are presenting the prime creations of their university years in an undergraduate thesis exhibition titled "We."
The April 14-30 showcase of paintings, drawing and photographs will be displayed in the Art Department Gallery, located on the lower level of McComas Hall. A 7-9 p.m. public reception for the artists will be given on the 22nd at the gallery, which has regular weekday hours of 10 a.m-4 p.m..
A studio program that may require five-and-a-half years to complete, MSU's bachelor of fine arts degree curriculum culminates with a pre-graduation presentation of work developed over a two-semester period. The 2004 spring semester showing includes the creations of:
--Shedrick D. Booker of Grenada, whose large ink-wash drawings are based on biblical stories;
--Matthew T. Brantley of Jackson, whose mural-size black-and-white photo images represent a theme of access to personal identity through image;
--Jade B. Buchanan of Tupelo, whose documentary-style color photographs follow the lives of four modern women;
--William E. Griffin of Winona, whose oil works present common still objects in an uncommonly active context;
--Tony Hocevar of Alpharetta, Ga., whose painterly portraits capture dolls in their "native" habitats; and
--Patrick Odom of Hattiesburg, whose oil painting series involves engaging people and relational objects.
In addition to the art department, the exhibition is co-sponsored by the MSU College of Arts and Sciences and patrons Beverly Gulmon of Jackson and The Chalet of Starkville.
