Local student[s] in leading honor society at Mississippi State

Some 140 students are newly inducted members in the Mississippi State University chapter of the nation's leading higher education honor society.

Phi Kappa Phi membership is open to seniors at the top of their class in all majors. Graduate students, juniors and occasional sophomores whose scholastic achievements are at the very highest levels also are eligible.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine. At present, there are more than 250 chapters worldwide with a total membership of some 50,000.

In addition to the students, seven MSU faculty members were inducted. They included Ioana Banicescu, associate professor of computer science and engineering; Susan M. Bridges, professor of computer science and engineering; Louay M. Chamra, associate professor of mechanical engineering; Mark F. Horstemeyer, mechanical engineering professor and chair of the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems; Michael D. Hudson, associate professor of agricultural economics; James A. Parsons, professor of mechanical engineering; and Maria Tomaso-Peterson, assistant research professor in entomology and plant pathology.
