Computer security expert leads MSU lecture next week

A leading authority on computer technologies and Internet security discusses his research on several related topics next week at Mississippi State University.

Hal Berghel, professor and director of the School of Computer Science at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, will lead programs Monday and Tuesday [April 26 and 27] on three different computer security topics. The public sessions are coordinated by MSU's Bagley College of Engineering and its department of computer science and engineering.

"Dr. Berghel is an Association of Computing Machinery Distinguished Lecturer and has quite a good reputation for his work and his publications," said Ray Vaughn, associate professor of computer science and engineering, and director of MSU's Center for Computer Security Research.

Also director of UNLV's Center for Cybermedia Research, Berghel is a recognized authority on the topics of Internet and Web technologies, Internet security and forensics, interactive and participatory computing environments, cyberpublishing and electronic information management.

His presentations will include:

* Monday, 12:15 p.m., 140 McCool Hall, "Wireless InFidelity," an overview of current and planned wireless technologies, their vulnerabilities and wireless security tools.

* Monday, 5:15 p.m., Swalm Building's Eastman Auditorium, "Hacking the Net," sponsored by the Association of Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

* Tuesday, 4 p.m., 106 Simrall Hall, "Hacking 2004: Beyond Viruses and Worms."
