Nearly 125 academically achieving students at the state's community and junior colleges will be recognized by Mississippi State University Friday [March 26] as part of 2004 Phi Theta Kappa Scholars' Day activities.
Enrolled at the 15 two-year institutions of higher learning, they are members of the international honor society for community college scholars.
Sponsored by the Office of Enrollment Services, their MSU visit begins with 8 a.m. registration and a continental breakfast in the Colvard Union, followed by a general assembly and a series of meetings with representatives of the offices of the Registrar and University Honors Program.
Participants conclude the day with information-sharing sessions led by academic advisers and the deans or other officials of MSU's eight colleges.
Founded in Missouri, Phi Theta Kappa today is the largest honor society in American higher education. In addition to academic excellence, its more than 1.5 million members are involved in various leadership and service programs at 1,200 chapters in the U.S. and abroad.
In 1996, the honor society accepted from the State of Mississippi the gift of more than five acres near Jackson to relocate its international operations. Dedication ceremonies for the PTK Center of Excellence were held the following year.
