A brass concert featuring solo and group performances will take place Thursday [March 25] at Mississippi State.

The Lyceum Faculty Chamber Series and the university's music education department will present the combined talents of the MSU Brass Quintet in a 7:30 p.m. performance in Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall. General admission is $5; free to MSU students with identification.

Performers include department head Michael Brown and faculty member Richard Human, along with guest artists Virginia Huff, George East and Sheree Lence. Accompanist Wendy Payton will join the group for the solo brass pieces.

Quintet selections include John Cheetham's "Scherzo" and the three-movement "Quintet" by English composer Malcolm Arnold. The group also premieres an arrangement of the ballad "Here's That Rainy Day Again" arranged by Cass Patrick, music theory instructor at Itawamba Community College.

Huff will solo on the trumpet with "Prelude and Ballade" by Balay, while Brown performs Virgil Thomson's "At the Beach."

Human gets the spotlight in "Two Dances," which has been transcribed for trombone and piano from an early Renaissance dance suite. East will play a work for unaccompanied tuba by Walter Hartley.

Lence rounds out the program with a special arrangement of the George Gershwin classic "Someone To Watch Over Me."
