A fourth-generation florist and internationally known floral consultant will lead a public program on his craft April 7 at Mississippi State University.
J Schwanke's one-hour presentation begins at 3:30 p.m. in 128 Dorman Hall. "Colors for Every Mood" is the title of his remarks. [Ed. note: No period after "J."]
The Comstock Park, Mich., resident's visit is sponsored by the student chapter of the American Institute of Floral Designers and Gamma Sigma Delta agriculture honor society. While on campus, he also will be keynote speaker for the society's awards and initiation banquet.
"Schwanke is widely regarded as one of the floral industry's outstanding experts and motivational speakers," said Jim DelPrince, head of MSU's retail floristry program. "We're very fortunate to have him visit Mississippi State and share his knowledge with members of the campus and area communities.
"Those hearing his lecture will leave both entertained and informed," he added.
Actually born at a floral convention, Schwanke has been a part of the industry for more than two decades. He led a family-owned business in Nebraska for 15 years before becoming an author and consultant.
He currently is a creative adviser to the Michigan-based John Henry Co., a major marketer, manufacturer and distributor of specialty items for the floriculture and horticulture industries. A lead designer for "Your Wedding Flower Album" and "The Wedding Flower Collection"--two John Henry publications--he also regularly contributes articles to "Florists' Review" and other industry publications.
Schwanke was inducted into the American Institute of Floral Design in 1991 and is a member of the American Academy of Floriculture, Professional Floral Commentators-International and Color Marketing Group.
