A new endowment at Mississippi State offers educational assistance for students while honoring a Union native and 1936 agricultural education graduate of the university.

Anna Majure Royston and Dr. Troy V. Majure Jr., both Clinton residents, recently established the Troy V. Majure Sr. Endowed Scholarship as a living memorial to their father, who died in 1983. The award is designated for deserving student-leaders enrolled in any College of Agriculture and Life Sciences major.

Royston said her goal for the scholarship is the development in Majure Scholars of "well-rounded individuals who are knowledgeable in modern technology and filled with a desire to help continue the development of advanced farming methods."

She added: "Our father realized that for Mississippians to achieve and to provide for themselves, they would have to make improvements in their farming methods. We hope the recipients of this scholarship will make his mission their lifework."

While a student at then Mississippi A&M College, the elder Majure held several student leadership offices, including president of the senior class. He also was a founding member in 1936 of the campus chapter of Kappa Sigma social fraternity.

A graduate of Army ROTC, he saw military service during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart for combat injuries incurred during fighting in Italy.

Majure worked in Mississippi public education for nearly four decades, concluding his career as state director of vocation and technical education.

His son Troy Jr. is a 1966 MSU animal science graduate now serving as a veterinarian at Animal Medical Center in Jackson. While a student, the younger Majure was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and, during his senior year, president of the Student Association.

"Education is so important to everything, not just farming," Royston says. "We hope we will be able to help with the education of some outstanding young person who wants to achieve in life."

Royston holds degrees from Mississippi University for Women and Mississippi College.
