A Tupelo native and doctoral-degree candidate studying guitar performance will present a March 2 recital at Mississippi State University.
Michael Boyd, currently seeking a musical arts degree at the University of Southern Mississippi, will be featured in a 7:30 p.m. public program in Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall. Boyd's visit is sponsored by MSU's music education department.
A student of guitar professor John De Chiaro, Boyd has been recognized by Listen.com as a performer whose sound "easily encompasses Spanish and traditional classical arrangements." He has extended his studies with master classes conducted by such well-known contemporary performers as Carlos Barbos-Lima and Marc Regnier, as well as the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.
His recital will include selections from composers Alonso Mudarra, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Jose Vinas, Enrique Granados, Federico Moreno-Torroba, Carlo Domeniconi, and Jorge Morel.
While studying at USM, Boyd has received the Frank Earl Marsh Scholarship for Music Performance and was the first selection for the Elmo and Mary Glenn Harrison Guitar Scholarship. He also has garnered top honors in competitions sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association and National Federation of Music Clubs.
When not a student, Boyd teaches guitar at Jones County Junior College and maintains an active state and regional performance schedule. A member of the Mississippi Guitar Quartet, he has recorded with Centaur Records.
