Trombonist Richard Human will be featured Thursday [March 4] in a Mississippi State University Faculty Lyceum Series concert.
Sponsored by the music education department, the evening of varied music will get under way at 7:30 p.m. at McComas Hall theater. Admission is free for Lyceum ticket holders and MSU students; $5 for the general public.
Human, an assistant professor of music education, will perform two original compositions by department colleague Paul Geraci: "So It Ends," a work for solo trombone and synthesizers composed last year specifically for Human; and "The Misadventures of Larry Brass," created specifically for the MSU Trombone Ensemble.
"'So It Ends' is a melancholy work that exploits the vocal qualities of the trombone," said Human, adding, 'The Misadventures of Larry Brass' is a "light-hearted and fun piece that the whole family will enjoy."
Human also will perform Eric Ewazen's "Sonata for Trombone" and "Concertino" by Lars Erik Larsson. He said both works are "multi-movement, 20th century pieces that make great technical demands of both trombonist and pianist."
The assistant professor described Ewazen's Sonata, composed less than five years ago, as a "beautiful, expressive piece that explores the trombone from top to bottom."
MSU pianist Wendy Payton, who also is organist for Starkville's First Presbyterian Church, will accompany Human on the Sonata and Concertino. Voice professor Linda Karen Smith will provide narration for "Misadventures."
