Future Drill Field cookouts by mechanical engineering majors at Mississippi State will feature a new state-of-the-art grill provided by the Viking Range Corp.
The Greenwood company has donated a 41-inch stainless steel Viking Professional Series grill to the university's student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, which holds campus cookouts each year to raise money for a variety of professional development activities and student competitions.
Led by former MSU architecture student Fred Carl Jr., Viking Range is the originator of commercial-type cooking equipment for the home. The company manufactures a complete line of ultra-premium, professional-style appliances.
With their existing grill aging and in need of replacement this fall, the ASME students followed university administrative channels to seek help from Viking, which had received assistance from some of the students in a 2001 design project. Viking responded with the donation and students used a mechanical engineering department pickup truck to collect the new grill and transport it to the MSU campus.
"The ASME section is very grateful for this donation and it will remind us of the generosity of Viking for years to come," said senior Justin Crapps of Florence, Ala., chair of the ASME section.
