A special $38,500 grant from ExxonMobil to Mississippi State will be channeled to seven departments and one center to meet a variety of educational needs.

ExxonMobil representatives recently presented the unrestricted gift to university officials as part of the Irving, Texas-based company's national Departmental Grants Program.

ExxonMobil awards the grants to schools offering degrees in fields from which the company recruits employees. The company is providing more than $1.6 million to 94 colleges and universities nationwide to assist with academic programs for the 2003 academic year.

Sharing in the grant will be MSU's departments of chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, computer science and engineering, accounting, management information systems, as well as the Holmes Cultural Diversity Center.

The awards may be used for educational purposes such as scholarships, field trips, visiting speakers, equipment purchases, student and faculty travel to professional meetings, or a variety of other projects.

"ExxonMobil has maintained a steadfast commitment to higher education, supporting initiatives and universities that align with the goals and needs of our company and employees," said Mark Chilton of the company's recruiting and employment office.
