In a ceremony Wednesday, Oct. 29, Mississippi State will recognize a major accomplishment for the university's Aiken Village Preschool.

The 9 a.m. event at the center honors recent accreditation from the Washington, D.C.-based National Association for the Education of Young Children, the nation's largest organization of early childhood educators. Accreditation places MSU among only a select number of child-care centers in the state.

The center is located on Wallace Circle, which is a short distance west of Humphrey Coliseum off Collegeview Street. Established nearly three decades ago, the preschool is a learning environment for children ages 3-5 that currently serves nearly 40 children.

MSU President Charles Lee, center director Traci Campbell and Cathy Grace, director of MSU's Early Childhood Institute, will be among the primary speakers.

Open to university faculty, staff and students, as well as residents of the local community, the facility is directed by the Early Childhood Institute in cooperation with the Starkville office of ICS/Head Start Inc. Additional on-campus assistance is provided by the university Office of Housing and Residence Life.

Supported by a U.S. Department of Education grant, center programs and curricula focus on teaching children to explore and engage in activities that introduce them to a complex world.

For more information on the ceremony, telephone Dr. Grace at (662) 325-4836 or Ms. Campbell at 325-3909.
