A Sept. 21 percussion recital at Mississippi State University will be the first in a series of faculty recitals presented during the school year.
Robert J. Damm, associate professor of music education, will perform at 3 p.m. in Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall. Admission for the event, which is part of the MSU Lyceum Faculty Chamber Series, is $5. MSU students and Lyceum season ticket holders will be admitted free of charge.
Damm--who has taught MSU courses in percussion, music education and world music since 1995--has selected both original and classical pieces. Included are the premiere of his original composition for three congas and CD playback titled "Ritmos de Congas." Also on the program are "Three Dances for Solo Snare Drum," "Mexican Dance No. 1 for Marimba," Pachabel's "Canon in D" arranged for vibraphone, and "Homage to Max Roach" for drum set.
Michael Chupa, a research associate at MSU's Remote Sensing Technologies Center, will join Damm on an African xylophone they recently constructed. In addition, guest artist Buddy Collier, a Starkville elementary school teacher, will sing a medley of Caribbean songs.
"Flight of the Bumblebee," featuring Damm with Chupa's accompaniment on piano, will close the program.
