Submissions are due by Dec. 4 for Mississippi State's annual undergraduate writing competition.
Sponsored by the English department, the contest accepts entries in five writing categories: short story, poetry, informal essay, formal essay, and one-act play.
Richard Lyons, director of the creative writing program, said all entries must be composed by members of the freshman-senior classes enrolled for academic credit during the 2003-04 school year.
"University staff members taking undergraduates classes during this time also may enter," he added.
The top submissions will represent the university at regional competition sponsored by the Southern Literary Festival.
Among specific competition requirements:
--Works cannot have been published elsewhere;
--Essays, stories and plays may not exceed 5,000 words; and
--Poetry may not exceed 100 lines for either one work or group of related works.
