A Starkville senior studying agricultural economics at Mississippi State is a 2003 selection for the national Wall Street Journal Outstanding Student Award.
A President's Scholar, Meredith E. Broyles also is ranked among the top 10 majors in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Broyles, she plans to enroll in law school after graduating from the university in December.
Initiated in 1948, the WSJ award recognizes students in each state with high academic achievements in undergraduate business-related programs.
To complement her studies, Broyles has worked as a student researcher in the agricultural economics department. She has been selected for membership in Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key, and Gamma Beta Phi honor societies, as well as the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Ambassadors and MSU Economics Club.
Last year, she worked in Washington, D.C., as a summer intern for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service. While there, she co-authored an article on minority farmers in production agriculture that recently was published in the Journal of Agricultural Lending.
Also in Washington, she served as the Cochran Agricultural Scholar in the office of Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.). In that capacity, she researched current issues in agriculture, met with constituents and interest groups and attended committee hearings.
A 1999 Starkville Academy graduate, Broyles has repeatedly been recognized for her involvement in the community. She has served as a Girl Scout troop leader at the Palmer Home in Columbus, helped raise funds for the Touched by An Angel Camp for mentally disabled children and volunteered for duty with the local humane society.
