Two longtime employees of the Mississippi State Extension Service are establishing a $20,000 academic endowment in the university's entomology and plant pathology department.

Made possible by and named for James H. and Ann Fondren Jarratt, the fund will be used to supplement and strengthen the department's teaching program. Equipment purchases and instructional enrichment efforts will be among the fund's primary uses.

James Jarratt, an extension entomologist who retired in January, worked at MSU since 1975. He is a 1961 graduate of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., who later received master's and doctoral degrees in entomology at MSU in 1970 and 1973, respectively. He began his extension service career in 1975.

Ann Jarratt is a 1959 graduate of Mississippi State College for Women, now Mississippi University for Women. She also later attended MSU, completing a master's degree in education in 1969, an educational specialist degree in 1970 and a doctorate in educational psychology in 1977. During a 20-year extension service career that concluded in 1996, she was a 4-H youth development specialist.

The James and Ann Jarratt Endowed Fund for Excellence in Entomology and Plant Pathology is an open fund in the MSU Foundation, which may be increased through additional contributions.
