Some 180 students are newly inducted members in the Mississippi State University chapter of the nation's leading higher education honor society.

Phi Kappa Phi membership is open to seniors at the top of their class in all majors. Graduate students, juniors and occasional sophomores whose scholastic achievements are at the very highest levels also are eligible.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine. At present, there are more than 250 chapters worldwide with a total membership of some 50,000.

In addition to the students, nine MSU faculty members were inducted. They included assistant professors Stephen J. Dinsmore and Kevin M. Hunt of wildlife and fisheries science; assistant professor Donald L. Grebner of forestry; assistant professor Matthew R. Lee of sociology; department head Liam E. Leightley of forest products; assistant professor Patricia M. Lestrade of foreign languages; professor Darrel W. Schmitz of geosciences; research associate Peter C. Smiley Jr. of wildlife and fisheries science; and instructor Rosa E. Vozzo of foreign languages.
