As part of the university's continuing 125th anniversary celebration during 2003, the Student Association at Mississippi State is sponsoring a special public program on Thursday [March 27].

"Celebrate Mississippi," a showcase of the state's heritage, culture and opportunities, will be held noon-4 p.m. on the campus Drill Field. In case of bad weather, the event, which is free and open to all, will take place in the Joe Frank Sanderson Center.

"We will be highlighting the various tourist attractions, local flavors, business opportunities, musical traditions, and foods of Mississippi," said SA Vice President Sara Peters of Tupelo. "It also will be an opportunity for all involved to show their pride in the state."

Peters said the multi-faceted event will feature exhibitions by businesses, artisans, restaurants, and other individuals and organizations. Also planned are a free barbecue lunch and performances by blues bands Willie King and the Liberators and John Mohead.

In recognition of this year's statewide elections, the student government organization has invited all incumbent members of the Mississippi Legislature and other state offices, as well as any announced candidates for those positions.
