Contact: Sammy McDavid

Some 30 current and future teachers from around the area will participate Saturday [March 29] in the first economic education workshop at Mississippi State University.

The 9 a.m.-3 p.m. program will focus on classroom instruction in financial literacy, with special attention given to Mississippi's required curriculum in economics. Veteran educators will be joined by students currently enrolled in teacher education programs.

State public school students are now required to complete a unit covering personal finance and financial responsibility before they can graduate.

The workshop is organized by MSU's Center for Economic and Financial Literacy, a part of the department of finance and economics in the College of Business and Industry. The center is supported by the Mississippi Council for Economic Education, International Paper Foundation.

Support for this and future workshops is being provided by the International Paper Foundation and the National Council for Economic Education, with which the state council is affiliated.
