For persons unsure what to give that special someone on Valentine's Day, remember: a florist stands ready to assist you.
"Rest assured that floristry professionals have put together a wide assortment of arrangements from which Valentine's Day customers may choose," says Lynette L. McDougald of Mississippi State University. "They have prepared for months in advance to assure that flowers, containers, stuffed animals, and novelty items are on hand."
McDougald, manager of the student-staffed, full-service University Florist and a veteran in the business, recommends that Valentine customers begin placing orders now. In addition to assuring the availability of desired plants and accompanying items on Feb. 14, early orders can result in early deliveries on Valentine's Day, she adds.
Because they are the floral symbol of love, McDougald says red roses continue to be the "absolute top seller." In second place is the tulip, which is both seasonally elegant and generally less expensive than the rose.
For shoppers wishing to eschew the classic floral selections, McDougald recommends:
--Plants of pink, purple and other alternative Valentine's colors;
--Lush mixed arrangements; and
--For an added touch, flowers in colorful vases, interesting pottery pieces or other "keepsake"' containers that can be enjoyed for years to come.
"Valentine's Day is about remembering those who are special to you," McDougald reminds. "That's why it's important to begin working with your florist now to select the most appropriate gift for the ones you love."
