Rachel A. Palmer of Long Beach is the 2002-03 H.H. Harned Sr. Memorial Scholar at Mississippi State University.

The $800 scholarship is a tribute to the former MSU biological sciences department head. Established in 1989 by Harned's children, the honor is presented annually to the department's outstanding microbiology major.

Palmer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Palmer and a 1999 graduate of Long Beach High School, where she was student body president.

At Mississippi State, she is a President's Scholar and a member of the University Honors Program and Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Beta Beta honor societies. She also serves on the Student Association's community service committee.

Following graduation in May, she plans to enter nursing school with a goal of becoming a nurse anesthetist.
