Mississippi State University is taking advantage of the upcoming winter holiday break to repair a section of a major campus roadway.

From Monday [Dec. 16] until Jan. 4, Barr Avenue will be closed to traffic at the western edge of campus where Barr becomes University Drive at the overpass bridge of the Highway 12 Bypass.

"The addition of some new underground utility lines beneath Barr to the new Hunter Henry Center has caused a depression in the roadway that will only grow worse if not repaired promptly," said Timmy Shaw, construction supervisor for MSU's physical plant department.

To accommodate travelers coming to campus on University Drive, a detour sign will direct vehicles to turn right onto Maxwell Street, then left onto Russell Street. From Russell, travelers then will cross the Highway 12 bypass and enter campus just south of Barr Avenue.

Vehicles leaving campus on Barr will be detoured left onto Extension Drive and its connection a short distance away from Barr Avenue.

Though fall commencement exercises on Friday [the 13th] conclude the academic semester at MSU, campus offices will remain open through Thursday [the 19th]. The winter holidays are Dec. 20-Jan. 1.

MSU reopens on Jan. 2 and 2003 spring semester classes begin on the 6th.
