A veteran United States diplomat who works on policy issues with the United Nations Security Council speaks Thursday [Oct. 3] at Mississippi State.
Richard M. Mills Jr. will discuss the current Iraqi crisis and related matters during a 3 p.m. public program in the John Grisham Room of the university's Mitchell Memorial Library. A question-and-answer session follows his remarks.
The political science department is sponsoring Mills' visit.
"Mr. Mills currently serves as political adviser to the United States ambassador to the U.N.," said associate professor Rick Travis. "Since joining the U.S. mission to the world body last year, he's been heavily involved in assisting the Security Council to shape policy issues."
In addition to the current U.S.-led drive to deal with Iraq's weapons program, Mills' presentation will address other pending international situations, added Travis, who heads the annual MSU-based Mississippi Model Security Council simulation program for high school and college students.
Mills, a member of the U.S. foreign service since 1988, holds a bachelor's degree from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Washington, D.C., and a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin. In addition to service as an aide to Secretary of State Madeline Albright during the Clinton Administration, he has held diplomatic posts in France, Russia and Ireland.
