A Sept. 26 recital at Mississippi State will feature works of American band composers while commemorating the university's centennial anniversary of its Famous Maroon Band.
Michael R. Brown, professor and head of the music education department, will perform on the trumpet during a 7:30 p.m. public program in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall. Wendy Payton will provide accompaniment.
General admission is $5; MSU students are admitted free with identification. (Season tickets for the department's Faculty Recital Series also may be purchased for $30 at the door.)
In honor of the MSU band's 100th anniversary, Interim President J. Charles Lee has designated the 2002-03 school year as "The Year of the Band." In keeping with the theme, Brown's repertoire will include works for trumpet by several American band composers, including Alfred Reed and Elliot Del Borgo.
He also will perform a selection for the cornet, "Fantaisie and Variations on Carnival of Venice" by J.B. Arban.
Payton will be featured in solo works by Tchaikovsky, Beach and Chaminade.
