The 2002-03 Faculty Recital Series at Mississippi State begins Thursday [Sept. 5] with a performance by Stephanie Furry on French horn.

Furry is a lecturer in the university's music education department, where she teaches horn, music history and music appreciation. Her public performance gets under way at 7:30 p.m. in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall.

Non-student season tickets for this year's nine-event series are $30. Individual tickets are $5 each for the first eight and $20 for the concluding Faculty Gala Concert. (MSU students with valid identification are admitted free to all.)

As in past years, concert proceeds are being applied to the department's scholarship fund.

Pianist Wendy Payton will accompany Furry on the works by Richard Strauss and Reinhold Gliere. The Ceremonial Brass Quintet, an off-campus group, will join for selections of Mozart, Cheetham and Pollack.

Prior to joining the MSU faculty, Furry played with numerous Los Angeles area orchestras and movie studios. As a studio hornist, she worked on the musical scores for "Meet Joe Black," "For Love of the Game" and "The Negotiator."

Furry holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama, a master's from Florida State University and a doctorate from the University of Southern California.
