A public reception Saturday [April 6] at Mississippi State will honor Yazoo City native Haley Barbour and current and past Barbour Scholars in Political Science at the university.
Beginning at 10 a.m. in the John Grisham Room of Mitchell Memorial Library, the informal gathering is sponsored by MSU's John C. Stennis Institute of Government, political science department and Office of Development.
Also a tribute to individuals and organizations whose contributions made the scholarships possible, the morning reception is among numerous public and private events being held on campus as part of the spring Super Bulldog Week celebration.
Barbour, a resident of both Yazoo City and Washington, D.C., is a national political consultant. He is a former two-term chairman of the Republican National Committee and a former White House director of political affairs.
Established at MSU in 1997 by Barbour's friends and family members, the competitive scholarship program bearing his name recognizes top junior political science majors planning careers in public service or the political arena. Scholars receive $1,000 per semester during their last two years of undergraduate study.
Seniors James L. Cresswell Jr. of Satartia and Terry L. Griffin of Holly Springs are current Barbour Scholars. There are six alumni members.
For additional information on the reception, telephone Stennis Institute executive director Marty Wiseman at (662) 325-3328.
