Students planning to enroll soon at Mississippi State are being encouraged to attend the spring semester edition of "Discovery: MSU," the university's academic introductory program being held this year on the third Friday in February.

Following registration on the 15th in the Colvard Union, the high school and community college students--and their parents--will attend a 9:30 a.m. opening assembly in the union ballroom. Participants then will meet with advisers and faculty in the various fields of study, as well as staff members from the offices of admissions, campus housing, financial aid, cooperative education, and student organizations, among others.

"Invitations have been sent throughout the region to encourage prospective students, along with their mothers and fathers, to take part in this very important day," said John R. Dickerson, director of enrollment services. More than 2,000 came to "Discovery" last spring, he added.

The day's schedule also includes academic competitions for an anticipated 1,200 or more juniors and seniors in the subjects of American history, art, chemistry, foreign languages, and physics. The art competition requires submission of a portfolio showing as many different types of a student's work as possible.

Top scorers in art, history, chemistry, and physics will receive MSU scholarships, plaques or other awards. Those successfully completing the foreign language test will be eligible to receive up to eight hours of course credit at the university in French, German, Latin, or Spanish.
