The author of a book billed as "the ultimate food lover's companion to the South" offers his culinary observations Tuesday [Nov. 13] at Mississippi State.
John T. Edge of Oxford, whose works include "Southern Belly" and "A Gracious Plenty, Recipes and Recollections from the American South," leads a noon public program in the university's Mitchell Memorial Library auditorium. Those attending may bring a brown-bag lunch.
The MSU Faculty and Professional Women's Association is sponsoring Edge's campus visit. Representatives of the MSU Bookstore will have copies of the 270-page "Southern Belly" (Hill Street Press, Athens, Ga.) available for purchase and autograph by the author.
"Belly's" 20-or-so Mississippi inclusions run from Corinth's White Trolley to the Coast's Ole Biloxi Schooner, from Doe's Eat Place in Greenville to Bill's Hamburgers in Amory.
Edge, who heads the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi, is a columnist for Oxford American magazine. In addition to commentaries on National Public Radio, he has written articles for Cooking Light, Food and Wine, Gentleman's Quarterly, and Gourmet magazines, among others. He is included in "Best Food Writing 2001."
Edge also is a regularly featured speaker for organizations ranging from the Smithsonian Institution to the International Association of Food Professionals.
The Faculty and Professional Women's Association works to promote the professional growth of women at Mississippi State. For more information about its program next week, telephone (662) 325-7454.
