MSU 'brass and ivory' concert launches faculty recital series

An evening of classical and contemporary music Tuesday [Sept. 25] will launch a music education faculty performance series at Mississippi State.

Titled "Brass and Ivory," the 7:30 p.m. public program in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall features university department head Michael R. Brown on trumpet and lecturer James R. Lesniak on piano. They will perform the works of J.S. Bach, Giuseppe Torelli, Jan K. Neruda, Francis Poulenc, and Aleksandr Skryabin.

Faculty colleagues Stephanie L. Furry on horn and Richard B. Human Jr. on trombone will provide accompaniment.

Their concert is the first of eight during the 2001-02 school year that culminates April 11 with a gala featuring a variety of music education faculty members. All proceeds from ticket sales will support departmental scholarships.

General admission tickets are $5 each for all individual performances except the final gala concert, which will be $20 per person. A $30 season package that includes the final gala may be purchased in advance. MSU students are admitted free with I.D. cards.

The other performances include:

--Oct. 25, Sheri Falcone on clarinet and saxophone, and James Lesniak on piano in "Reeds in the Wind," an evening of romantic, contemporary and jazz music.

--Nov. 11, flutist Lana Johns and percussionist Robert Damm in "Pipes and Drums," a collection of contemporary world music.

--Nov. 15, James Lesniak in "Piano Sounds," a grand pianoforte recital.

--Jan. 24, trombonist Richard Human Jr. in "The Slide Show."

--Feb. 7, a flute/piano musical collage titled "Singles, Mixed Doubles and an Occasional Triple Play" by pianists Jackie Edwards-Henry and Leanne Fazio and flutist Lana Johns.

--March 24, Robert Damm leads a percussion showcase titled "The Beat Goes On."

--April 11, "The Grand Gala," a selection of light and entertaining works.
