The Mississippi State University student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers is receiving a national Letter of Honorable Mention by its parent organization.
The ASCE recognition is based on a variety of community service activities recorded in the chapter's 2000 annual report. Among them was site preparation for a recreational complex at Starkville's Ward-Stewart Elementary School.
Founded in 1852, ASCE is America's oldest national engineering society. Its membership includes more than 123,000 civil engineers worldwide and students in more than 220 collegiate chapters and 25 clubs.
The MSU chapter enrolls more than 100 majors. Officers during 2000 included president Phillip B. Allen of Brandon, vice president Donald J. Corder of Lucedale and secretary/reporter Robert "Robbie" Goss of Vicksburg. Corder graduated in December, while Allen is a senior and Goss a junior.
"A real strength of our student chapter is the quality of its public service projects," said faculty adviser and civil engineering professor Dennis Truax. "The projects benefit students technically and professionally, as well as encouraging them to develop a sense of community responsibility."
