For the third year, a Mississippi State women's organization is sponsoring a weekend of campus activities to raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Members of Delta Delta Delta social sorority are sponsoring a "Frats at Bat" Softball Tournament on Friday and Saturday [March 30 and 31] at the university's Intramural RecPlex.
Also part of the fund-raising effort will be an 8 p.m. Wednesday [the 28th] concert featuring the band Ingram Hill. Admission is $5 per person to the alcohol-free event at the Statehouse Theater on Main Street in Starkville.
Angie Andrews of Greenville, a sophomore communication major and chapter vice president for public relations, said the organization is working to exceed the $35,000 raised last year. Since 1999, the event has garnered a total of $70,000 for St. Jude, she added.
Involving competition by MSU fraternity and sorority members, the softball tournament opens at 4 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m., Saturday. Home-run derby bats begin swinging at 1 p.m. on Saturday, also at the RecPlex.
Tickets--$5 a day for both field events--may be purchased in advance from any Tri-Delta member or at the gate. The multi-field RecPlex is located on the south side of campus near the Louis Wise Center.
"We deeply appreciate the tremendous support shown for these activities over the past two years," Andrews said "We also again invite MSU students, alumni, employees, and friends, as well as other residents of Oktibbeha and surrounding counties, to help the kids of St. Jude."
The Memphis, Tenn., medical facility was the first in the United States solely to conduct basic and clinical research into catastrophic diseases, primarily cancer, faced by children. Mississippi is among the states directly benefiting from its services.
