A Mississippi State University senior in computer science is receiving national recognition for undergraduate research achievements.
Sara S. Smolensky of Waveland will be included among the honorable mentions in the 2001 Computing Research Association's Outstanding Undergraduate Awards program. She joins some 30 students from United States and Canadian universities selected for recognition.
Smolensky has worked as a research assistant on two major MSU projects. One dealt with classification of radar images of the ocean floor for the U.S. Navy, while the other involved creation of web-based programs to help physics students better understand lecture material.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Smolensky and a 1996 Our Lady Academy graduate, she currently serves as president of the MSU chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery. In 1999, she completed a summer internship with the Computing Research Association's mentorship program at the University of Massachusetts.
The association includes more than 180 North American academic departments of computer science and computer engineering, as well as industrial, governmental and educational laboratories and centers engaged in basic computing research.
