Mississippi State officials are organizing a variety of activities this month to welcome students residing in university housing.

Residence halls open at 10 a.m. Aug. 12 on the Starkville campus.

"Residence Hall Welcome Weeks" begin on the 17th with the 2000 Freshman Roundup at the Joe Frank Sanderson Center, the $19.1 million, 150,000 square-foot recreation facility that opened in 1998.

On the 19th, a free concert at the University Amphitheater will feature music by "The Flames" and "Curiosity Shop." In addition to the Residence Hall Association, concert sponsors include the Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils and MSU Music Maker Productions.

During the week of Aug. 20-26, individual residence halls will hold a series of informational meetings for occupants. In conjunction, the Residence Hall Association is sponsoring a series of student interest sessions on the 23rd and 24th.

Also scheduled on the 24th will be the "Making the Grade" Academic Success Seminar to help students prepare for fall classwork.

Welcome-back activities conclude on the 31st with a student activities fair, also at the Sanderson Center.

"All campus residents are being urged to check hall bulletin boards and ask residence hall staff members for specific times and dates of these events," said Melissa Crews, Office of Housing and Residence Life's assistant director.

"Whether they are beginning or continuing their studies at Mississippi State, we want our students to have a successful start to the 2000-2001 school year," she added.
