Edward J. Everitt of Jackson is receiving the American Consulting Engineers Council's highest university student award.

A junior civil engineering major at Mississippi State University, Everitt is the ACEC's 2000 Scholar of the Year. The award, which includes a $5,000 scholarship, was presented recently during the organization's National Engineers Week celebration in Washington, D.C.

Everitt is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Everitt and a 1997 graduate of Jackson Preparatory School.

At MSU he is a Dean's Scholar, treasurer of Kappa Sigma social fraternity and a member of the MSU Roadrunner student recruiting team. He also is active in the Reformed University Fellowship.

Based in Washington, ACEC is the largest organization of consulting engineers in the United States. Membership includes more than 5,700 independent engineering firms spread among 52 state and regional member organizations.

Everitt also is receiving $500 for submitting the top entry in a scholarship competition sponsored by the ACEC's state affiliate, the Jackson-based Consulting Engineers Council of Mississippi.

To be eligible for the scholarships, students must be rising juniors, seniors or fifth-year engineering majors at an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology-approved school. Winners are selected on the basis of grade-point average, work experience, recommendations, college activities, and an essay.

Everitt is the second MSU civil engineering student in three years to take state and national honors in the ACEC scholarship competitions. Michael Grubbs Jr. of Ridgeland was the 1998 winner of both awards.
