Writer, law enforcement veteran and Mississippi State alumnus Jack Kean of Starkville presents his personal papers to the university in an Oct. 26 public ceremony.
Following the brief presentation program that begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Mitchell Memorial Library auditorium, the author and freelance journalist will conduct a seminar on "Writing Your First Novel." A reception and book signing follow in the nearby Grisham Room.
Kean has written two novels, "Deadly Sacrifice" and "What If the Winner Dies?"-the latter to be published in May. He is working on a third, titled "One Nation-Divisible."
In addition to novels, the 1962 Starkville High School graduate writes humorous and nostalgic pieces, as well as general interest articles. He has been published in "Good Dog," "Back Porch" and "Wry Bred" magazines and in Southern Owned and Southern Operated, a quarterly journal. He also is a regular contributor to the Starkville Daily News.
He graduated from MSU in 1971, then went on to receive a law degree from the University of Mississippi.
Kean began a career in law enforcement in 1974 as a United States postal inspector. He joined the U.S. Labor Department's Office of the Inspector General in 1978, serving from 1984-94 as I.G. of the eight-state Atlanta Region.
In 1994, Kean became a deputy assistant inspector general, directing nationwide fraud investigations. He retired from federal service in 1996.
