Top high school seniors from throughout the Southeast will visit Mississippi State Sept. 11 for the university's Scholars' Recognition Day.

President Malcolm Portera recently extended invitations on the basis of high American College or Scholastic Aptitude test scores. Each student has a composite ACT score of at least 28 (out of a maximum 36) or the equivalent SAT score of 1230.

"We want to let these outstanding young men and women, and their parents, know that Mississippi State is aware of their accomplishments and wishes to publicly congratulate them," said Jimmy Abraham, director of enrollment services.

Abraham said Scholars Recognition Day is sponsored annually by the MSU Alumni Association.

Following tours of campus, students and parents will be special guests at a luncheon with Portera and other university leaders. Major portions of the day's schedule will involve meetings with the academic deans and faculty members in the students' chosen or anticipated fields of study, as well as with representatives of the University Honors Programs.

Information sessions on financial aid, scholarships, student life, housing, and MSU's extensive cooperative education program also are scheduled.

Activities conclude with a cookout and open house sponsored by the University Honors Council and special seating for the MSU-University of Memphis football game at Scott Field.
