Engineers expand widely used classroom text

Two Mississippi State University professors are updating a classic engineering textbook to meet the needs of today's students and industry.

Mechanical engineering professors Keith Hodge and Robert Taylor recently completed the third edition of "Analysis and Design of Energy Systems." Originally written by Hodge and published in 1985, the Prentice-Hall textbook is considered a staple of mechanical engineering education in the United States.

"This edition is a major rewrite of the manuscript," Taylor said. "It is designed to better prepare students for the energy related fields of engineering, such as the petroleum and chemical industries, as well as for work in electric power generation and the pulp and paper industries."

Among significant changes in the book is the coverage of modern numerical analysis computer packages, such as Mathcad.
