Classical and contemporary music will be featured in a Nov. 15 free concert presented by the Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Association.
Under the direction of Denise Rowan, the 50-member symphony orchestra will perform works from Handel, Rimsky-Korsakov and Paule Maurice. The program begins at 3 p.m. at Starkville's Greensboro Center.
Guest soloist is alto saxophonist Gail Levinsky, MSU assistant professor of woodwinds. She will be featured in Paule Maurice's "Tableaux de Provence."
Levinsky is a founding member of the Vision Quartet, a Chicago-based all saxophone group that performs works of 20th century composers. She has performed throughout the United States, with a recent appearance at the Biennial Conference of the North American Saxophone Alliance and presentations at the College Music Society and Southern Composers League.
The symphony also will perform Rimsky-Korsakov's "An Overture on Russian Themes" and Handel's Suite II in D Major from Water Music.
Now in its 30th season, the association regularly sponsors a variety of free community programming, including the orchestra, symphony chorus and programs for children. Individuals, businesses, and community and state organizations provide support for its efforts.
Starkville has been recognized as the smallest U.S. community consecutively supporting a symphony.
