Social work faculty and students from Mississippi State return to Coahoma County Thursday [Oct. 29] to present the results of a community needs assessment.

The university group will share with the communities of Jonestown, Coahoma, Lula, and Rich results of a random survey conducted in June. The cross-community public program begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Jonestown Community Center.

Also, the MSU students and faculty are joining with community leaders in sponsoring three follow-up events during the weekend. They include:

--A community forum in Lula on Friday [the 30th]. The time and location are still being finalized.

--A sleepover at the Coahoma Inn for children 11-14 from all four towns from 7 p.m. Saturday [the 31st] until 7 a.m. Sunday. Transportation will be provided.

--The first Cross-Community Family Fall Festival, also on Saturday. Featuring food and music, the festival kicks off with a parade on Coahoma's Main Street and ends on Main Street in Jonestown.

The combined population of the four municipalities is about 2,500. All are located in the northern part of the North Delta county.

"These activities are a continuing effort of our social work program to promote community building and empowerment among these towns," said MSU social work professor Carolyn Bryant.

Mississippi State students and community residents first met this summer when a Bryant-directed social work class spent several days polling people on their concerns and needs for the communities.
