Michael R. Grubbs Jr. of Ridgeland is receiving the American Consulting Engineers Council's top university student award.

A senior civil engineering major at Mississippi State, Grubbs captured the $5,000 award in ACEC's 1998 national scholarship competition. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. M. Ray Grubbs Sr. and a Jackson Prep graduate.

Based in Washington, D.C., the council is the largest organization of consulting engineers in the United States. Membership includes more than 5,700 independent engineering firms spread among 52 state and regional member organizations.

An MSU President's Scholar, Grubbs also is receiving $500 for having the top entry in scholarship competition sponsored by ACEC's state affiliate, the Jackson-based Consulting Engineers Council of Mississippi.

To be eligible for the scholarships, students must be rising juniors, seniors or fifth-year engineering majors at an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology-approved school. Winners are selected on the basis of grade point average, work experience, recommendations, college activities, and an essay.

Among Grubbs activities at MSU has been a redesign of the College of Engineering's Internet web site. The new site will be completed during the fall semester.
