Mississippi State's Division of Student Affairs and Garan Inc. today announced a new training program for international students at the university.

The Garan Management Seminars are designed specifically for students completing degrees in academic areas outside of business management.

Garan designs, manufactures and sells apparel for children, men and women under the trademarks Garan, Garanimals, Everlast, and other names. Its world headquarters are located in New York City.

The company's Starkville and Eupora manufacturing operations are providing $6,000 to support the series of daylong seminars. To be held on successive Saturdays, the training initially involves some two dozen students from around the world.

"These student represent the elite educated core in their home countries," said Roy H. Ruby, MSU vice president for student affairs, in making the announcement. "Upon returning home, they will assume significant jobs in the private and government sectors."

As Garan and other U.S. companies expand their global markets, "it is in their best interests to have contacts who are knowledgeable about American business practices and can help promote American trade and commerce in their respective countries," he added.

To be taught by faculty in the College of Business and Industry, the seminars will include lectures, special guest leaders and a variety of small-group activities.

"Garan's support of this new program is deeply appreciated," Ruby said. "In expressing thanks, I speak both for the university and the participating international students."

Helen K. Zuercher, director of MSU's international services office, joined Ruby in accepting the training grant check from Garan officials Rodney Faver, Bryan Lott and Richard L. Shattuck.

Faver is vice president of manufacturing; Lott, vice president of domestic manufacturing; and Shattuck, director of personnel. Faver and Shattuck are of Starkville, while Lott resides in Eupora.
