Special student event this week

Fall semester sorority rush activities at Mississippi State University will conclude Friday, Aug. 21, with a special program--presentation of handmade projects to each organization's philanthropy.

"Fun with Philanthropy" features the combined efforts of some 500 rush participants. For the second consecutive year, the young MSU women will spend part of the weeklong new member selection process creating a variety of items for presentation to a representative of the philanthropies.

For example, hand-painted flower pots will be made for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's Mississippi affiliate, while care packages of pillowcases, cups and decorated puppet stages will be prepared for hospitalized children at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle in Columbus.

Beginning at 2:45 p.m., the handiwork of seven separate projects will be presented at the University Amphitheater in front of some 800 sorority members and would-be pledges. The program is part of "Bid Day" ceremonies (the day sororities choose new members).

Angela Humphrey of the MSU Panhellenic Council says the event has proved so popular that several area universities have requested and received demonstrations of the "Fun with Philanthropy" project.
