Political scholars, junkies: New Stennis Institute election report out

Contact: Sammy McDavid

Copies of the second in a continuing series of analyses of state and federal elections now are available from Mississippi State University.

Produced and distributed by MSU's John C. Stennis Institute of Government, the 30-page, softbound publication provides an overview of partisan voting and the 1996 general election.

Joining associate political science professor David A. Breaux in preparing the report are institute research analyst Daye Dearing and senior research analyst Don Slabach.

Their report is divided into four major sections, titled "Regional Inroads for State Republicans," "Term Limits, a Republican Issue," "Race and Region Meet Republicans," and "Where in the Political World is Mississippi?"

A dozen graphs and illustrative maps help to visually enhance the report's major points.

In addition to analyzing elections, institute director Marty Wiseman said the "Mississippi Votes" series is designed to track voting results for major amendments and citizen initiatives, as well as partisan trends in the developing two-party system within the state.

"It's our hope that these editions will provide a comprehensive reference for examining the realities of Mississippi politics," Wiseman said. "We feel they can be particularly beneficial to elected officials, members of the media, politically involved citizens, and future candidates."
