For Mississippi State students, faculty and staff, opening of the university's 118th consecutive fall semester is only a few weeks away.
Mississippi A&M College, the original name of the state's comprehensive land-grant institution, was established in 1878 and welcomed its first students two years later.
the 1998 fall semester, campus housing on the Starkville campus opens at 10 a.m. Aug. 16. New student orientation is scheduled on the 19th for all who didn't participate in the regular June orientation sessions.
Final regular fall registration will take place Aug. 20 and 21, with classes beginning at 8 a.m. on the 24th. Late registration continues through Sept. 4.
Other major student- and alumni-related dates for this initial phase of Mississippi State's 1998-99 school year include:
--Sept. 5, Scholars' Recognition Day for top high school seniors, held in conjunction with MSU's home football game with Vanderbilt University.
--Sept. 7, Labor Day holiday [university closed].
--Oct. 16-17, combined Parent's Weekend for the moms and dads of enrolled students, "Discovery Day" (the 17th) for prospective students and Homecoming (also the 17th) for alumni and friends, held in conjunction with the East Tennessee State University football game.
--Nov. 26-27, Thanksgiving holidays [university closed].
--Dec. 7, last day for beginning freshmen and transfer students to apply for 1999 spring semester admission.
--Dec. 18, fall commencement exercises.
New student orientation for the 1999 spring semester will be held Jan. 6, with second-semester classes beginning on the 11th. Spring commencement exercises will be May 13.
