Former congressman's papers to be opened June 5

The official opening of former U.S. Rep. David R. Bowen's papers will take place Friday [June 5] at Mississippi State University.

An informal, public reception begins at 2 p.m. in Mitchell Memorial Library. Bowen, now living in Jackson, served as a Mississippi 2nd District congressman 1973-1983. He donated his papers to Mississippi State in 1980.

Born in Houston, Bowen grew up in Cleveland. He is a graduate of Harvard and Oxford universities and taught at Mississippi College, Millsaps and Mississippi State.

Prior to his election to Congress, Bowen was congressional liaison for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. He also served as Mississippi's first federal-state programs coordinator.
