The final results of national advertising design competition includes two Mississippi State art department students among the top three winners and three others with honorable mentions.

University seniors Ben Couvillion of Starkville and Emily Garrick of Grenada finished in second and third place, respectively, in the 1998 Collegiate Challenge. Honorable mentions are seniors Carl Fox of Jackson [240 Rivera Drive, 39211] and Heath Kleinke of Starkville, and junior Jody Martindale of Pearl.

For the third consecutive year, MSU students have won at least one of the top three awards--including first place in 1996-in the creative challenge sponsored by USA Today, Follett College Stores and ARAMARK, a national managed service provider.

Some 250 students from more than 50 colleges and universities submitted entries for an advertisement to encourage volunteers to teach others to read.

Couvillion received $1,000 and Garrick $500. Both are majoring in fine arts with a graphic design emphasis.

All the MSU honorees are students in associate professor Jamie Mixon's graphic design advanced class, which entered the contest as a class project.

The winners, two students from the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla., received $2,500 for their entry. Their design was featured in a full-page ad in the May 7th USA Today.
